Melissa McKnight
Deputy Health Director
Jackson County Department of Public Health

Melissa McKnight, MPH, is the Deputy Health Director with the Jackson County Department of Public Health—a state accredited agency that serves Jackson and surrounding counties in Western North Carolina.

Melissa holds degrees from the University of Georgia, Masters of Public Health, with a focus on Health Promotion and Behavior, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Her career has spanned non-profit administration, grant work, and public health service. In her current capacity as Deputy Health Director, McKnight oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of public health interventions.   McKnight coordinates the agency’s Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, and Accreditation Teams, ensuring compliance with state public health practice guidelines. McKnight acts as the agency’s Public Information Officer, responsible for all external communications. McKnight leads the agency’s efforts in innovative projects, seeking grant funding, forming regional partnerships, assessing emerging disease trends, and more. Additionally, Ms. McKnight oversees and evaluates the Environmental Health, Health Education, and Hepatitis C Sections of the agency.
