Submission Title: Reduce racial injustice within the Criminal Justice System
Submission Overview: African Americans are disproportionately represented in all areas of the Criminal Justice system. Decreasing this disparity is our goal. To start we began with targeting those entering and exiting the Criminal Justice system. After a weeklong training at Georgetown University’s Center for Juvenile Justice Reform the team chose two target areas in which to decrease racial disparities. Following Sequential Intercept Mapping where more than 70 community members came together, the community’s priorities included the Housing First approach as well as expanded emergency shelters without the barrier of verifying homelessness. By addressing the pathway in and out of the Criminal Justice system we are hopeful and confident to make a permanent impact on racial disparity in our jail. We understand this is only the beginning, requiring many new approaches, new policies, new partnerships, and new programs.
