Presenting Organization: Medici Road
Submission Title: Reducing Poverty One Road at a Time
Contest Result: 2021 Finalist

Submission Overview: Medici Road is a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit that uses a racial equity lens to create opportunities, policies, products, and programs to help people transition out of poverty and climb the economic ladder. For their Turn the Curve project, Medici Road looked at poverty rates in DC, and identified which policies within the city were working, as well as which policies were hurting black and brown communities. By understanding the material conditions which have created economic inequality in DC, Medici Road proposed high and low cost initiatives aimed at helping low income households.

The first initiative will be a podcast to change the conversation about solving poverty in a silo, created through partnerships with neighborhood associations and the local radio station WHUR. They also have proposed a cohort study and a new course for stakeholders, which will be mandatory for all new hires and grant recipients.
