Clear Impact is excited to announce that Vibrant Hawai’i – a nonprofit organization focused on convening community partners to combat poverty and inequity in Hawai’i – has won the $25,000 grand prize in the Racial Equity Turn the Curve Poster Contest.
Kalehua Kukahiko, Associate of Data, Impact, and Equity Initiatives at Vibrant Hawai’i presented her organization’s contest submission (Historical Trauma and Cultural Healing) at the Measurable Equity 2021: Funding Racial Progress Virtual Conference on November 9th, 2021. Five contest finalists presented their work during the event, and Vibrant Hawai’i garnered the most votes among nearly 500 conference attendees.
Clear Impact congratulates Vibrant Hawai’i on their illuminating and passionate presentation, which explored racial disparities in teen suicide attempts. The submission presents a comprehensive Turn the Curve Action Plan for suicide prevention, focusing on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youth. The Action Plan conveys the factors that impact youth suicide and suggests strategies to reduce suicide attempts in NHPI youth, including:
- “Increasing Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainers”
- “Culturally-based Community Suicide Prevention and Treatment Programs”
- “Trauma-Informed Care Training”
- Culturally appropriate “Teen Suicide Information Brochure and Social Media Campaigns”
- Culturally-inclusive Suicide Prevention Program in schools
To fulfill contest requirements, Vibrant Hawai’i created an analysis and action plan for the disaggregated measure “% Teen Suicide Attempts” in the Clear Impact Scorecard software. You can download a PDF of the Scorecard here or view an embedded version below:

About the Contest
In 2021, Clear Impact launched the inaugural Racial Equity Turn the Curve Plan Poster Contest – a contest aimed at helping agencies and organizations learn how to effectively use “Turn the Curve” thinking to address racial equity issues.
The grand prize winner received $25,000 for their organization or racial equity initiative of choice.
Twenty contestants developed and submitted their Racial Equity Turn the Curve Plans for consideration. We received a variety of plans addressing both quality-of-life population indicators and internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts.
A panel graded the quality of contestants’ plans against a rubric of 6 factors. The following five finalists received the highest grades: Identity, Inc.; LiveWell Kershaw Coalition, Medici Road, Smart Incentives, and Vibrant Hawai’i.
Finalists presented their plans at the Measurable Equity 2021: Funding Racial Progress Virtual Conference on November 9th. Nearly 500 attendees were able to watch finalists’ presentations and vote on their favorite. The finalist with the most votes – Vibrant Hawai’i – will receive $25,000. All finalists received a free Results-Based Accountability Professional Certification course for their efforts.
